Evaluation and Reflection

Week 1 (07/03/2022)-

The work we had created today was designs from our photoshop work that we then transferred onto our lino and cut it. the work I had was a sunset between two hills with a ocean in front of it all. The work I have in front of me think of a peaceful area. It reminds me of how beautiful nature can be. It makes me want to be in the wilderness and relax. The work I am in the middle of creating will be colourful and bright, during this week will carry on with this work layering it with different colours. This will be part of my development. I enjoy using charcoal and biro as well as printing ink this is because I like the look of the bold black and white lines used through theses materials and the themes I have enjoyed in the past have been pollution in the botanical theme.

Week 2/3 (14/03/2022)

The work I have created in the past week has been a lino cut inspired by my photoshop work. When I had cut this I then printed it and I really enjoyed it however if I had more time I would put another colour on top of the existing yellow and blue. I enjoyed this process and it was fun to do, it now links into my theme of tarot cards as it looks like something that would be put into a card. We also did a collage of our handmade sketchbooks on photoshop to help us come up with a idea which we then drew up to do the above. Also over the weekend I gathered primary research from a social group that links into my theme.

(15/03/2022)

The work I have done today is reflect on my work that I have done and work my way through some tasks I set myself for research and I have done these into my specialist pathway and into woodcuts. I also put the primary research I gathered onto my website as well as the secondary research that I had done into tattooing, woodcuts, artists and tarot or oracle cards.

Week 4 (28/03/2022)

This week I have planned to write my project proposal and that I would like to create some practical pieces in an abstract style developing from my sketches in my sketchbook into bigger better pieces that can be developed into a final piece. The work I have planned for my experimental piece is bright and colourful. As I would like to push myself out of my comfort zone and see what I can make. The materials I will use are lino and the printing ink, also the lino cutter tool I will be extra safe with using this as I am going to follow health and safety precautions.

(30/03/2022)

Today I have finished some practical pieces such as my developed work on my sketches that I have experimented with making it abstract by making a registration lino cut. Which is also what I learnt today on how to do it, although I did enjoy the finished look I didn't like the continuous cuts so I left this work as it was, finished. Also I have uploaded more research and images to my website and I need to reflect on them shortly.

Week 5 (06/04/2022)

In the past week I have come up with my idea for final piece I have decided that I want to make a A2 tarot card in black and white. This was done with marker. I was really pleased with the outcome of the castle and the outlines, stones in the picture. I then needed to learn some typography and did this by researching different styles. I then started making some experimental pieces in these styles until I found one that was right for me. I love the look of the final touch I had added with this typography. Making this work complete, after I had finished this I had a idea to make a 3D piece and so I developed my work into 3D through carving a castle into expanding foam.

Week 6 (28/04/2022)

In this week I have painted my work that I had done before half term by base coating it in grey paint and then dry brushing some white and some slight shades of green onto it giving my work layers and depth. I have also developed my work from the original piece into set design, 2D relief models and also a 3D piece, during this process I have learnt on how to use the wire cutter again and be safe around it and what a relief model is. Next week I will continue to make and develop as well as upload onto WIX

Week 7 (09/05/2022)

In the past week I have finished my relief model and painted my foam castle this went really well as the relief model went well because I made it in layers and it gave my work texture and depth as well as tone. Also the painting on the castle went well as I dry brushed it in different shades of grey and white with a slight colour of green towards the bottom to make it more realistic. I enjoyed making this because model making is a great line of work for me. So far the research I have used has helped me through how to make and what to make especially the research into model making as this Is the path I would like to go down and have done with the work I made in the past few weeks.  Also the research into illustration and wood cuts helped me develop one of the pieces I made and it gave me inspiration into use bold black lines and smaller lines too.

Evaluation

Throughout this project I have responded to my theme in a personal way, I have done this by using my sub theme of fortune telling to bring what I do in my spare time into my college work, I have used my own designs in illustration and model making to show how I work and what I do personally. I also have considered ethics in my work by giving opposite arguments in the tarot theme and what people’s opinions are on the theme. My work effectively communicates my ideas through the development of my first piece until my last, extending from illustration into modelling, the idea of the nine of staves has been clearly shown in this work as it has always had a castle in it. I have learnt through this theme that there are more people interested in this than I had thought and through thoroughly researching these cards I have found out more of the deeper intents and meanings to them. Also, the different ways that a tarot card can be shown in style, whether it be abstract or it being an older style.

In my research I have used a range of artists to inspire me to come up with my own designs using illustration that I researched, and the woodcut also gave me help into making my work illustration, with the other artists I have researched into model making I have used there style on a larger scale, this was helpful as I wouldn’t have known on where to start  or what style of model making I would have done. I could have researched more artists to help inform my work more than what I already have, however due to the amount of time illustration and model making takes I had little to no time to research more, although I am happy with the work I have produced. With the primary research I have gathered from my social life and pervious experiences in fortune telling, it has effectively helped me figure out where and what card I wanted to use and whether I wanted to use a tarot card or a oracle card and some meaning behind cards which led me into choosing the nine of staves. Next time I would have gathered more research on my own to see how different me project could have turned out. I researched the materials by experimenting with Modroc and paper mache by creating a few blocks covered in each, this helped me figure out what I wanted to use in my final model. I chose Modroc as it gave a nicer finish and was sturdier to cover the foamboard I used for the base. The other research I had done such as research on castles and cardboard relief models helped me make a relief model and inspired me to use the shape and form of a castle. I would have done this differently by researching deeper into the form of the castle and maybe the texture of it. This research led me to use effective methods such as carving into lino and expanding foam as well as painting, dry brush. This was helpful as it gave my work more tone and depth.

The most successful parts of my work is the finished model and making it with the flock I had used, as well as the expanding foam castle that I had carved into and dry brushed. If I where to do this again I would have made the model on a bigger scale so that I could have made it more detailed for example the castle I would have carved into on the model instead of just painting it. The only thing I didn’t expect to happen was the floating part of the island and I was struggling to hold it up, until I then fixed it by putting a hold in the bottom and putting wire through it to hold it up. The visual language I used was tone, texture, form, space, shape, and colour. I have used this skilfully by cutting into things and using light colour to give my work more of a realistic look. Texture to make the castle bricks more lifelike. My work is dynamic as it is constantly changing, and my work is always being developed into better models. I have used my materials creatively by using expanding foam and making something from it, and the natural bubbles In the foam worked out really well too as it gave the texture of bricks. Next time I would use this again but maybe try to get more bubbles in my work.

My on going reflections have helped me through this project by making me understand what went well and what I wouldn’t want to do again, this was great as it would make me understand things for example I wouldn’t like to do a abstract lino cut again, because it was confusing to me, I understood this through reflecting my work, I also set myself the work I would better next time I was is and followed through with it. I have considered sustainability through the materials that I have used and how much I have used, such as the use of expanding foam now makes it into something else instead of it going to waste, I could have done more in the way of sustainability such as using paper mache instead of Modroc however it wasn’t sturdy enough for my models. I have completed more tasks that I thought I would in the set time and have met all deadlines and completed all my tasks in practical and WIX, also have competed more practical work than I thought I could such as the final model I had done I wouldn’t have thought that I could complete. Next time I wouldn’t change a thing as I am happy with the way I have worked at a fast and high standard. I have learn that planning your time and what you are going to do will give you a set deadline for the work you have to do, which makes you work a little bit faster which meant I had more time at the end to make sure I had everything I needed on my website.

My theme is fortune telling and I responded to this in a personal way by developing the nine of staves from my research into illustration and model making. This is my personal touch as I enjoy illustrating and model making. I have successfully applied ethics into my work by researching the ethics in tarot cards and from fortune tellers. This then led into my ideas so that I wouldn’t offend anyone in my work in model making and illustration. My work shows my ideas that I want to communicate because it shows the nine of staves and the visual meanings behind it. I have learnt more about this theme through primary research, in my social group who have told me what tarot reading means to them.

The artists I had researched helped inform my work, this was because they gave me ideas on how I could make my models and illustration look. I looked through the woodcut research to give me ideas in illustration. I could have researched more artists into this work next time to give me even more of an idea into more of what I could do more. The primary research I used was from as social group in tarot card readings or oracle cards, it helped me understand the difference and some of the meanings into some cards. I also researched the materials through experiments, this was Modroc and paper mache to inform me of the work I wanted to use for my final model, I also used paint to dry brush most of my work. The other research I have done such as, castles and cardboard relief models helped me make the work, relief models and the textures and tones of a castle brick. Next time I would do more research specifically into castle brick to find more information about the texture. The methods I used in the making process of my work was dry brushing with paint and carving, I carved into expanding foam to give it layers and depth.

The most successful parts of my work I would say are the final model, the floating island the finishing touches of flock and other materials really finished the work of. If I what to do this again I would probably make the work bigger so I could have given the model more detail. The only things that went wrong in my work is that I couldn’t get an idea on how to make the island floating, so in the end I put a hole in the bottom of the island, this was so I could put wire in the bottom to securely make the island “float”. The visual language I used was carving and painting, this was used on my 2D relief model, and I also used the dry brush skill on the relief and my final model to give it depth and tone. Next time if I had more time, I would have carefully painted a bit more. My work is dynamic as I am always developing the piece into something else, for example my illustration piece then developed into my model making. Throughout my reflections I have set myself weekly tasks and have come up with what went well and what I wouldn’t like to do again, for example I wouldn’t make my lino piece as I didn’t lie the abstraction of it. I have considered sustainability in my work by upcycling expanding foam into a castle and by exploring in Modroc and paper mache I have chosen Modroc although paper mache would have been more sustainable.

I met all deadlines for my work and completed all my tasks but at a very tight time, next time I would organise my time better as I could of then had more time to make work and write. I did make a planning slide that I used to help me with the work I needed to do, I also used my reflections to come up with what I needed to do in the following week this helped me organise time to meet the deadlines.

The presentation of my art is all on my WIX all neatly put in order from where I started to where I finished, all in their own individual slides, I did most of my work on paper instead of my sketchbook, which is what I would change next time so I had more work in there. I have identified my audience through secondary research and primary research to find out who it would be, I have aimed my work at fortune tellers and other people who read cards themselves. My work is quite effective in illustration and modelling because I have presented it really detailed, it should show people the meaning of the nine of staves. If I was to change anything I would change how small I made the model, I would like to enlarge the model to a better size to make it more detailed.

My personal goals as a creative practitioner are to become a tattooist or to become a model maker. This project has supported me towards this goal by research, and making things up for my portfolio, that I could later on hand into a tattooist to show the skills I have and what I can do, this could also help me in model making as it has developed my skills in this profession. I could keep improving these skills by doing it more often and explore outside of my comfort zone to make sure I like or dislike what I do and can do.
