Project Proposal

My theme is fortune telling and I am focusing on visual communication and will be illustrating in 2D and 3D to develop tarot card designs, I have a professional inspiration to become a tattooist and my hobby is model making and I wanted this project to develop my skills in both areas, using the designs to inform tattooing later.

I accessed primary research through personal experiences in my social life; I read my own tarot cards, visited professional readers, and interviewed my social group to learn more and what it means to them. For my secondary source I plan to learn more about tarot card readings and the origins. I have selected nine of staves as I'm interested in using visual communication to explore: Resilience, courage, persistence, test of faith and boundaries, the reverse meaning is; Inner resources, struggle, overwhelm, defensive, paranoia.

These words generated the a visual representation of a castle, which I plan to explore in may forms because it represents to me resilience, courage, persistence, test of faith and boundaries. I will present my work in the form of a stall at the final exhibition and produce a WIX website and will select some of this work as part of my portfolio for tattoo apprenticeship.

I will also use the work of others such as the artists: Mowgi (tattooist) and Kolahari (tattooist) as well as a woodcut artist Albrecht Dürer and artist research into tarot cards Antonio Cicognara, Bonifacio. On top of these artists, I will also use another artist who does models, his name is Thomas Doyle and focuses on detailed design models. I learn best by making and then researching and will continue to work in this fashion mainly developing my work into models and using different skills such as texture and tone as well as depth, I will do this through layering and adding extreme detail through flock and gravel, and developing dry brushing skills

My initial enquiry is to consider “How many different ways can I illustrate tarot cards?” I am interested exploring abstraction, scale, and the potential of making 3D tarot cards. The visual skills I will be using are line, tone, texture, form and will also explore typography. I will explore this by working and experimenting. My focus begins with bold, black, and white work as this suit’s my aspirations as a tattooist, I will also develop my work into model making and make it to a professional standard that is extremely detailed. I have also considered the sustainability of my materials such as lino, I can re-use this material to print more. Also expanding foam I will upcycle into a castle. I will develop my 2D illustration tarot cards into a 3D model making by using a range of materials and techniques to produce a range of work.

I will develop my 2D illustration tarot cards into a 3D model making by using a range of model making materials, and decorate of flock and other materials.

I have considered ethics by looking at reliable sources for the opposite arguments on the topic, a fortune teller said "professional and ethical Tarot readers out there, who are well-meaning individuals who want to make a difference in people’s lives" and the opposite "The cards in the major arcana don't necessarily represent us in a given reading; they might represent someone else in our lives" I don’t want to limit my creative investigation so I will allow my work and research to develop into innovative and exciting designs.

The deadline for this project is the 27th of May 2022 so I will be limiting myself to designing a few tarot cards due to the limited time. My work will be suitable people interested in fortune telling and the 3D models work could be used in promoting my designs towards people interested in this field of work such as fortune tellers or at the very least people who read them. I will record my reflective practice on my reflections tab on WIX and on everything that I upload on there as well as my sketchbook. On my WIX I have a planning slide that I write in to make plans for the following week and I stick to the plans I make, this is my weekly targets .
